1954 was the year of Bannisters four minute mile, Bill Haleys Rock Around the Clock and Doris Days Secret Love. Godzilla first appeared on screen and Hancocks Half Hour hit the airwaves. Exciting literary launches included The Lord of the Rings and Lord of the Flies but April 11 proved the most boring day of the twentieth century.
