KADRI VOORAND - IN DUO WITH MIHKEL MÄLGAND CD

Stuudioalbum „In Duo with Mihkel Mälgand“ lisab elavesitusele veelgi avarama, produtseerituma dimensiooni, mis väljendub õhulistes keelpilli- ja vokaalikihtides, segatuna maitsekate elektrooniliste manipulatsioonide ja beat-elementidega. Erikülaline NOËP annab oma jõulise panuse loos „What If I Did Kill You“ ning ainsa bändiversioonina kõlab „Kuldrenett“, kus liituvad Marek Talts kitarril ja Ahto Abner trummidel.

Originaalloomingule keskendunud kooslus, mille keskmes on vokaali, bassi ja klaveri leidlik improvisatoorne mängumaa sümbioosis elektrooniliste efektide ja hingestatud poeesiaga. Duo ei sea endale stiililisi piire, kokku sulatatakse popi, folgi, jazzi ja isegi roki elemente. Esile tõusevad emotsioon ja omapärased tekstid.

2020. aasta Eesti Jazziauhindade jagamisel võitsid Kadri Voorand ja Mihkel Mälgand aasta jazzansambli tiitli albumiga "In Duo with Mihkel Mälgand".

Kadri Voorand, the vocalist and the pianist, creates music through strong emotional storytelling, combining catchy rhythms with a completely unique way of blending improvisational pop, jazz and folk elements. On this album, she plays in duo with the bassist Mihkel Mälgand. Both at lives and on the album, their strong sense of each other’s musical rhythm and improvisational moments result in a tight duo. The pop-like melodies are combined with virtuosic improvisations and skilled technique. The album has heartbreaking power ballads next to hip grooves, accompanied by a totally unique twist in the sound and unexpected, daring lyrics. The recording differs from live setup by extra instruments, all played by the duo of Voorand and Mälgand, except for track No. 6 where Voorand’s quartet members Ahto Abner and Marek Talts appear. Also, the album features a special guest, NOËP, who appears in What If I Did Kill You, adding some deep male voice with a tasteful New Age pop vibe.

Kadri Voorand is a well-established vocalist whose original music and expression have brought her a number of prizes and performances in Estonia as well as abroad. She has toured in many countries, including Great Britain, Germany, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Hungary, Norway, China, Italy, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, and Uzbekistan. In 2017 she received the Estonian Music Awards for The Best Female Artist of the Year and The Best Jazz Album of the Year for her album Armupurjus (Love Intoxication). She has released eight albums in different line-ups: quartet, trio, solo album, her a cappella project Estonian Voices, and now in duo with the double bass player Mihkel Mälgand. She appears on many more albums, such as Tõnu Kõrvits’s Mirror (ECM 2016), Anthony Banker’s Dance Music etc.

‟I was absolutely bowled over by the engaging quality of her voice, her imaginative arrangements and the wonderfully controlled energy of her delivery.”
- Jazz Journal

‟Her voice flitting from purist acrobatics to electronics-filtered extremes. All of her vocal perversion is in real-time, as she resourcefully knits a construction of rhythmic repeats, or flicks on a horrific distortion effect, often snapping back into something profoundly unsettling in its depth of contrast. Meanwhile, she’s back at the piano, marrying voice and keys in a completely symbiotic existence.”
